What is excellent customer service and how do we maintain it? It is about building good relationships with your customers. Thanking the customer and promoting a positive, helpful and friendly environment that will ensure they leave  
with a great impression.

The three basic rules for excellent customer service are:

  1. Answer your phone – The first rule of excellent customer service is that your business phone needs to be answered. Get call forwarding, or an answering service.  Make sure that someone is picking up the phone when someone calls your business.
  2. Do not make promises unless you can keep them – This may well be the most important of all of these rules for excellent customer service. If you do not plan to keep the promises you make, do not promise anything. Reliability is one of the keys to any good relationship. 
  3. Listen to your customers – As a customer, it is very frustrating when you are speaking to someone about the business, and seconds after you finish talking you discovered that that person has not been paying attention and you need to explain everything all over again.

One thing to always remember is that; “the customer is always right!” Even if they are wrong, treat them like they are right. They may come back to you in the future for other things if you treat them the way you want to be treated.

Remember that excellent customer service is not something done overnight. Excellent customer service is the foundation on which your entire organization should be built. Customer service should be the whole company, not just a portion of it.
